SNAP JUDGEMENTS: Newton Cut as Jones Wins Starting QB Job

It is official, Mac Jones has won the starting spot in the Patriots offense over Cam Newton. The rookie showed out in the preseason and in camp as a terrific game manager, showing a full grasp of the playbook, leading him to oust Cam Newton as QB1, evidenced by the fact the Patriots cut Newton.

Mac Jones: QB1

With Newton being a victim of roster cutdowns, the Pats knew they had their man in Mac Jones, who outperformed Cam in the preseason. While many may be surprised that Cam has been cut, we must remember that not only was he outperformed, he also had that false positive debacle and his refusal to be vaccinated during the pandemic reportedly rubbed some players the wrong way, and on top of that, Jones supposedly has a superior grasp of New England’s complicated offensive scheme despite Newton being there longer. All in all, Cam is out and Jones is the starter. He should thrive, seeing as he has a top 10 offensive line, a strong running game with 4 capable running backs, and 2 skilled tight ends, as well as some respectable receivers. They’ll likely use a ground and pound offense and the short passing game to ease Jones in, kind of like when Brady first started out…

Roster cutdowns are due to be finished soon and we can’t bar any trades or surprise cuts, so lets see what Coach Belichick has up his (cut) sleeve.
