In case you can’t tell from the title, the big man has returned. Trent Brown, a 6’8, 350 lb., offensive tackle and former Patriot, is back. Brown was only on the Patriots for one year in the 2018-2019 season, which saw New England win the super bowl and Brown was the left tackle who protected Tom Brady’s blindside and demolished defenders. That was season was so productive for Brown, he was able to secure a 4 year, $66 million deal with the Raiders, a well deserved contract. While he made the pro bowl during his tenure in Las Vegas, both sides decided that it was best to find a trade and where else to go than New England, the place where Trent Brown became great?
The Patriots gave up a 5th round pick to the Raiders in exchange for Trent Brown and a 7th rounder, a true steal. The Pats and Brown were able to agree on a 1 year $11 million deal, which saves the Pats money. This shakes up the offensive line in a big way, this almost guarantees that free agent Joe Thuney, is gone, he wants more than what New England is willing to pay and they can shuffle the players around to fit his absence. This also means that New England will likely cut Marcus Cannon, a veteran offensive lineman who missed the 2020 season as an opt out, trading him would free $7 million in cap room as well.
The big moves are just beginning… what will Belichick do next?
